What is a Doula?

The word, "doula," comes from the Greek word and refers to the most important woman in the ancient Greek household. Among other things, this person helped women through childbearing. The word has since come to refer to someone who is  experienced in childbirth that provides continuous informational, emotional, and physical support before, during and just after childbirth.

A doula supports you and your family in achieving the birth you desire whether that is at home, in a hospital or at a birth center. Unlike your midwife, OB/gyn or family practitioner, the ideal doula, familiar with all aspects both the birthing process as well as the procedures of the rest of the birthing team, she will be at your side throughout the process to look after you emotionally and help you to attain the birth you desire.
